Symptoms of heatstroke
When pets are wheezing, restless, barking and drooling, there are signs of heatstroke. The dog will then have difficulty breathing, raise its head and neck to breathe or become sluggish. If you don't do the proper treatment at this time, the pet will be shocked, unconscious, and eventually die.
To judge whether a pet has heatstroke, in addition to judging by the pet's external behavior and reaction, the owner can also touch or observe. For example, is the pet in a stuffy, high-temperature environment, and whether the body temperature is much higher than usual.
Or observe whether the skin has flushing, extensive bleeding spots, bleeding spots, etc. from the hairless part of the pet's abdomen. These are all signs of possible heatstroke.
Measures to prevent heatstroke in pets
1. Living environment: place your pet in a place with good ventilation and avoid the sun. If necessary, blow an electric fan or install air-conditioning indoors.
2. Life management: Long-haired pets can shave their hair to help dissipate heat, and add enough water at any time.
3.Outdoor activities: Avoid taking pets out when the temperature is high. If you want to go out, you must bring drinking water and reduce the amount of exercise.
4. Be alert: always pay attention to whether pets have abnormal behaviors or symptoms, especially short-nosed cats or dogs, obese, poor cardiopulmonary or liver and kidney functions, and animals with chronic diseases are prone to heatstroke. Pay special attention to feeding.
Treatment of pet heatstroke
The first step for the owner is to untie the collar, harness, or other items that are wrapped or hung on the pet. If your pet has only mild heatstroke such as drooling, panting, or restlessness, you can lower the ambient temperature first. For example, move your pet to the shade, or blow it with an electric fan, cool it down with air-conditioning, and then give it a proper amount of water to recover slowly. If the pet has difficulty breathing and is in a sluggish state, wet the pet's body with cold water nearby, or half soak it in water and then send it to the doctor for emergency treatment.
Special Note
When the pet has been severely heatstroke and comatose, first wet it with ice water or wrap the whole body with an ice towel, or wipe it with alcohol to cool down. Or pour cold water from the pet’s anus into the rectum, and then send it to the doctor as soon as possible. On the way to the doctor, pay attention to keeping the pet's head down and neck straight to keep the airway open and prevent vomiting. Or it can be treated by bleeding.
The following is the treatment of common pet dog heatstroke
Most panting dogs will rejuvenate as long as they replenish some water and take a rest in a cool place. But when they get too hot, the reaction to heatstroke will follow. Then it will have difficulty breathing, raise its head and neck to breathe, or look sluggish. If proper treatment is not done at this time, the dog will be in shock, coma, and eventually death.
Or observe from the hairless part of the pet's abdomen, whether the skin appears flushing, bleeding spots, blood spots, etc., these may be signs of heatstroke.
What to do with dog heatstroke
In summer, if you just take your dog out for a walk, and when you get home, give the dog a popsicle when he lays on the ground and gasps, which can help him lower the temperature in his body faster, which is good for the dog. But don't eat too much, be careful of stomach trouble. For smaller dogs, it's best to divide a popsicle into several times to finish eating. Ice water is also good. You can give your dog some ice water to drink after taking the dog home. It is also good for lowering the dog’s body temperature.
The dog’s heatstroke is very rapid, so when a dog is found to have heatstroke, it is more important and effective for the owner to perform first aid than to send it to the hospital immediately.
1. Mild heat stroke
Symptoms: drooling, panting, restlessness.
Solution: Untie the collar and harness and lower the ambient temperature. Move your pet to a cool place or blow it with an electric fan or air conditioner to cool it down, and then give it a proper amount of water to recover slowly.
2. Moderate heat stroke
Solution: Wet the pet's body with ice water first, or half soak it in water. Be careful not to use ice water when soaking, so that the dog's body temperature will drop sharply. Generally, water from the tap is sufficient. After the emergency treatment is completed, immediately send to the hospital.
3. Severe heat stroke
Symptoms: coma and shock
Solution: First wet with ice water or wrap the whole body with a towel, or wipe with alcohol to cool down, or pour cold water from the anus into the rectum, and then send it to the hospital as soon as possible. On the way to the hospital, be sure to lower your pet's head and straighten your neck to keep breathing smooth and prevent vomiting.
